The Neil Falkner Outward Bound Legacy

There is value in a life fully lived.
– Neil Falkner

Neil was a ski patroller on Whistler Mountain, a lover of the outdoors, an avid mountain biker, and skilled motorcyclist. Neil lead motorcycle tours through the back roads of BC in summer, and pursued back-country and alpine skiing in winter. When Neil was 16 in 1986, he went on an Outward Bound expedition in the British Columbia wilderness (near Kerameos), returning with confidence, pride, and a desire to challenge himself and others. On April 12, 2002, he died on a backcountry skiing expedition in the Canadian Rockies.

Neil’s family established a scholarship in his memory with Outward Bound Canada in 2003. A leader in outdoor education, Outward Bound provides wilderness expeditions for people of all ages and abilities. Participants experience physical and emotional success by pushing beyond their ideas of what is possible. Students learn the technical skills demanded by travel in the wilderness and develop adaptability, responsibility, confidence, integrity, persistence, and teamwork. Visit to learn more.

The Neil Falkner Legacy provides an annual Outward Bound wilderness program for a grade 10 student at Britannia Secondary (the high school Neil attended) in East Vancouver. Neil’s legacy also funded youth in the Whistler/Perberton area from 2006 to 2012. The fund is now providing an annual Outward Bound Program for youth on the Sunshine  Coast. Gender equality is considered in the selection process. The legacy fund covers the full cost of the recipient’s adventure.
